Prayers for teachers ask God for wisdom, patience, strength, and joy for the people who teach our children, and for the students in their care. Here are prayers for teachers and students, a back-to-school and first-day prayer, Scripture to pray, and a simple way for teachers to pray for every student by name.

What do you pray for teachers?

Praying for teachers means asking God for what they need to do hard, important work well. Pray for wisdom in how they teach, patience with every student, strength for long days, joy in their work, safety in their classroom, and good relationships with students and families. Pray for a specific teacher by name, and for the students they will see this week.

What prayers can you pray for teachers?

A few prayers for teachers, rooted in Scripture:

What is a good back-to-school prayer for teachers?

A back-to-school prayer for teachers can be prayed by parents, students, or a church on the first day:

Lord, as this school year begins, we pray for every teacher. Give them wisdom to teach well, patience for hard days, and love for each student in their room. Keep them and their students safe. Help them see the students who are struggling, and give them joy in their work. In Jesus’ name, amen.

For a teacher you know, pray it with their name, and send them a note to say you prayed.

How do you pray for teachers and students together?

Praying for teachers and students together asks God to bless the whole classroom. Pray for students to learn well: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding” (Proverbs 2:6, ESV). Pray for kindness between students, for kids who are lonely or struggling at home, and for teachers to see and help them. God gave Daniel and his friends “learning and skill in all literature and wisdom” (Daniel 1:17, ESV). He still gives wisdom to students.

How can Christian teachers pray at work?

Christian teachers can pray before the school day, for each student by name, and in quiet moments during a hard day. Jesus said, “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16, ESV). Faithful, patient, excellent teaching is one way to do that.

Scripture takes teaching seriously: “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness” (James 3:1, ESV). That’s a reason to pray for teachers often.

How can teachers pray for their students by name?

Teachers can pray for every student by name without it becoming overwhelming by spreading their class across the week. Pray for five or six students each day, so every student comes up once a week. In The Pray App, make a prayer card for each group of students and set Repeat to Weekly on its day.

The Repeat menu with Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Set each group of students to come up on its own day of the week.

On Home, tap New prayer card, write a short prayer for those students, and under Details tap Repeat, choose Weekly, and tap the day. Add a Bible verse, like Proverbs 2:6. Each day, Today shows only that day’s students.

Parents can make a card for their child’s teacher the same way. For teens in your life, see prayer for teenagers, and for your own kids, see how to pray for your children.

The Pray App is free on the App Store, with no ads. See how to choose how often a prayer comes up.
